Activities

Journals

  • Dr. Hoare is an Associate Editor of the materials section of Chemical Engineering Journal (Impact Factor 6.2), the leading chemical engineering research journal.  In the context of materials, CEJ focuses on papers involving different aspects of the preparation and characterization of advanced materials, including novel physical and chemical methods of synthesis, novel processes to obtain materials of different morphologies (particles, films, fibers), modification of material surface and structural properties, always from a chemical engineering point of view. Manuscripts dealing with micro- and nano-structured materials, and those describing the preparation of composite and hybrid materials with advanced properties are especially welcome.

  • Dr. Hoare is a member of the Editorial Advisory Boards of Biomacromolecules (Impact Factor 5.5) and Colloid and Polymer Science (Impact Factor 1.8) and

Societies

Dr. Hoare is currently the Past-President of the Canadian Chapter of the Controlled Release Society (CC-CRS) (http://www.cc-crs.com).  CC-CRS is a nucleus and networking organization for academic, clinical and industrial members active in the fields of the science and technology of controlled delivery of drugs and therapeutic agents in human and animal health and other active agents in environmental, consumer and industrial applications. The local chapter encourages and helps organize networking opportunities and communication among Canadian controlled release specialists and promotes education and student involvement in this field.  Membership is free!

Dr. Hoare is the current President (2016-2017) of the Canadian Biomaterials Society (CBS) (http://www.biomaterials.ca).  The Canadian Biomaterials Society (CBS) is an incorporated, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the development of biomaterials science, technology, and education in Canadian universities, industry, and government. CBS was established in 1973 and has a long-standing dedication to undergraduate and graduate biomaterials education.  CBS is also a member of the international community of biomaterials societies as represented by the International Union of Societies of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUS-BSE).  Dr. Hoare chaired the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Biomaterials Society in Toronto.

Dr. Hoare is also an active member in the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and the international Controlled Release Society (CRS) and is a licensed professional engineer (P. Eng.) in the province of Ontario.

Outreach

  • Dr. Hoare serves as the Faculty Advisor for the Biotechnology streams of Venture (http://venture.mcmaster.ca/), McMaster’s summer enrichment camp for elementary school students, and L.E.A.P. (http://leap.mcmaster.ca/), an advanced camp for high school students.

  • Several students in the Hoare lab are actively involved in Let’s Talk Science (https://www.science.mcmaster.ca/lts/), an initiative aiming to spark interest in science and science education among elementary school students.

  • Dr. Hoare also visits a few senior elementary or high schools every year to talk about what engineering is (complete with a diaper demonstration!)  If you are an elementary school science teacher or a high school chemistry teacher and would like to have this presentation in one of your classes, please contact Dr. Hoare.  We have also organized visits to our Department in the past for high school chemistry classes and would be happy to work with you to make something happen should you be interested.

  • Dr. Hoare is the Associate Chair of Graduate Studies for the Department of Chemical Engineering.  If you are considering graduate studies and have questions about what it’s all about and how to apply, please contact Dr. Hoare.
